GRAND AT JOHN CHAMBERLAIN ESTATE

On Shelter Island, three worlds came together for an evening: Nordic Knots, Sotheby’s and the John Chamberlain Estate.

Inside the Estate’s converted stable, surrounded by works spanning Chamberlain’s career, the Grand collection was laid across the floor in an expansive patchwork of colour. Soft wool met folded steel; familiar shades found themselves in unfamiliar company. The installation became the setting for an evening devoted to Chamberlain’s remarkable world – and the beginning of a conversation between two very different materials.

John Chamberlain arrived at his unmistakable language in the late 1950s, transforming automobile steel into sculpture through compression, balance and intuition. What can appear forceful from a distance becomes surprisingly delicate up close: colour folded into colour, hard surfaces behaving almost like fabric.

On Shelter Island, Chamberlain found the space to work at a scale that suited him. His studio remains much as he left it, while a former horse stable nearby has become an exhibition space for works spanning his career – monumental folds of painted metal given the room to breathe.

For our visit to the Estate, Grand entered this landscape as a softer counterpoint. A patchwork of rugs in some of the collection’s most distinctive colours formed an expansive field beneath Chamberlain’s sculptures.

There was no attempt to compete. Instead, the installation became a study in contrasts: wool and steel, softness and weight, the quiet geometry of the rugs against the restless folds of the sculptures. Yet the longer they sat together, the more their differences seemed to dissolve. Both are deeply concerned with colour, surface and scale – and with how material can change the feeling of a room.

For an evening on Shelter Island, Grand became part of Chamberlain’s world. Not quite background, not quite foreground, but a new ground altogether.
